Sadly it was reported last night that the distinguished American war correspondent Marie Colvin was killed in Syria after the media building she was stationed at was shelled by Syrian forces. Four other Western journalists were also killed.
Apparently she had illegally crossed into Syria on the back of a motocross motorcycle defying the Syrian government’s attempts to block access to the country by members of the world’s press. We watched her final dispatch on the Channel Four News on Tuesday night which detailed the death of a baby from wounds inflicted when his family house had been hit by a shell.
Marie Colvin was also famous for her trademark eyepatch which she wore after she lost the sight of her eye due to shrapnel from RPG fire during her time covering the Sri Lankan civil war in April 2001.
