In all honesty this is a difficult trailer to watch. On the one hand you have an amazing cast in a film set in the post-war 40s, but on the other hand you have Kanye West providing the soundtrack?
Gangster Squad is directed by Ruben Fleischer, (Zombieland, 30 Minutes Or Less) and stars, (takes deep breath), Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Pena and Robert Patrick and tells the story of a special squad of LA policeman drafted together by their superiors to specifically keep East coast gangsters out of the City Of Angels during the 40s and 50s, by absolutely any means neccesarry. Sort of like The Untouchables meets Mulholland Falls.
Here’s our problem, we want to love this movie and until we actually get to see it in it’s entirety we can’t cast judgement. But there a few elements featured in the trailer which are cause for concern, a few tired, worn-out Hollywood cliches which we’ve seen a million times before. Members of the jury please consider the following evidence:
1. The throwing and catching of the pump-action shotgun in mid-air.
2.Dangerous exploding shop windows.
3. Slow motion punches.
4. Walking away from a burning car.
5. Finally, the ‘I’m not a cop anymore‘ scene.
