Apparently some anonymous member of an exclusive screening audience described this film as being: ‘Like Superbad on crack’. It was probably Paul Ross a man who famously described another film as being like: ‘The Matrix…on acid!’ He can’t help himself, it’s an affliction.
This just looks like every 80s and 90s high school, coming of age, house party movie rolled up into one large blunt. You have the fat kid who will no doubt be at the butt of every joke throughout the movie, you have the kid who is clearly modelled on Mouth from The Goonies, continually combing his hair and making wise cracks and you have the geeky yet relatively normal/good looking kid who will obviously end up with the girl of his dreams come the credits.
Produced by The Hangover director Todd Phillips and co-written by Matt Drake who is the rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist in the English thrash metal group Evile, (you just can’t make this shit up), the plot rattles along like so:
“Project X” follows three seemingly anonymous high school seniors as they attempt to finally make a name for themselves. Their idea is innocent enough: let’s throw a party that no one will forget… but nothing could prepare them for this party. Word spreads quickly as dreams are ruined, records are blemished and legends are born. “Project X” is a warning to parents and police everywhere. This film has been rated R for crude and sexual content throughout, nudity, drugs, drinking, pervasive language, reckless behavior and mayhem-all involving teens.
As you’ll notice from the trailer it’s shot using the old hand-held, found footage trick, so basically this movie is just a complete rip-off of Cloverfield where the party is the monster and it’s out of control…like it was on crack! See what they did there?
